Who to contact

The right number, from the right place.

Every link on this page goes to the organisation's own website. We publish no bank phone numbers and no email addresses of our own — because a number that is wrong, or that later changes hands, is exactly the problem this page exists to solve.

Do not search for your bank's phone number. Fake contact pages are bought and advertised specifically to catch people looking for one, and they rank well. People have lost money to a number they found while trying to report losing money.

Use the number in your banking app, the number on the back of your card, or dial 159.

Calling your bank

159 is a short code, like 999 or 111. It connects you to your own bank's fraud team and it cannot be spoofed — nobody can call you from it, and no fake page can redirect it.

Free from UK landlines and mobiles. If someone rings claiming to be your bank and asks you to move money: hang up, wait a minute, then dial 159 yourself.

In the scheme: Bank of Scotland, Barclays, First Direct, HSBC UK, Halifax, Lloyds Bank, Metro Bank, Monzo, NatWest, Nationwide Building Society, Royal Bank of Scotland, Santander UK, Starling Bank, TSB, The Co-operative Bank, Tide, Ulster Bank, and others — covering more than 99% of UK current accounts.

Complaints and fraud reporting, by bank

Where to report the fraud to your bank, and where to send a formal complaint if you want your money back. Every link goes to the institution's own site.

Reporting the crime, and going further

Telling your bank is not the same as reporting a crime, and neither is the same as complaining if your bank says no. These are the three separate routes.

Report Fraud

The national reporting centre for fraud and cyber crime in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, formerly Action Fraud.

When: Report the crime here. Reporting is what puts the fraud into the national picture, even where nothing is recovered.

By phone: 0300 123 2040
Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm. If a business is under a live cyber attack, call this number rather than reporting online.

Police Scotland

Fraud in Scotland is reported to Police Scotland, not to Report Fraud.

When: If you live in Scotland.

By phone: 101
999 if a crime is in progress.

Financial Ombudsman Service

The free, independent service that settles complaints between consumers and financial businesses.

When: After your bank has given a final response, or after eight weeks with no resolution. Not before — they will send you back.

By phone: 0800 023 4567
Free from UK landlines and mobiles.
